Reading a German employment contract through a relocation lens
Notice periods, Probezeit, and relocation clauses decide whether a family can still adjust housing or school plans after signing.
Probezeit (probation) of three or six months is standard. For a relocating family it means housing and Kita deposits may outlast job security. Budget a buffer and ask whether the employer contributes to temporary housing—some do for scarce roles, many do not.
Check the Arbeitsort clause. A contract that lists “Germany-wide deployment” can conflict with a child’s school place in Regensburg. Clarify expected travel nights before you sign, especially if the second parent’s schedule depends on predictable evenings.
Relocation allowances, if present, often reimburse receipts rather than pay a lump sum upfront. Time the move so invoices fall inside the reimbursement window.
Autoinfrasolutions does not provide legal advice, but Interview Coaching and Family Relocation Career Planning both include a practical reading checklist so you know which clauses to raise with a qualified employment lawyer before you commit the household.
